Learn About Lab Grown Diamonds

A detailed explanation on what Lab Grown Diamonds are and how are they different than natural diamonds.

BENEFITS OF LAB GROWN DIAMONDS

Higher Quality

Lab-grown Diamonds are superior in quality as natural diamonds are grown and removed in chaos and have more dirt and defects.

Ethically Sourced

Lab-grown comparatively conflict-free diamonds than natural diamonds, some naturally mined diamonds come with a fair amount of baggage.

Environment Friendly

Lab-grown diamonds do need the energy to be made. Still, it’s substantially less impactful to the environment compared to natural diamonds.

Value for money

Lab-grown diamonds offer superior value. They are more profitable than natural diamonds of comparable size and quality.

What are LAB Grown Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds are identical to their natural counterparts in every way, except they are grown in a lab from a diamond seed instead of pulled from the earth. These lab-created diamonds consist of actual carbon atoms arranged in the characteristic diamond crystal structure. Since they are made of the same material as natural diamonds, they exhibit the same optical and chemical properties.

How are LAB grown diamonds formed?

There are 2 technologies to replicate the diamond formation process:

  • HPHT stands for high pressure and high temperature. HPHT is a technique developed in the 1950s to create beautiful and lucrative diamonds. Through HPHT, genuine diamonds can be made from scratch in a controlled environment and existing diamonds can have their colour grade improved to make them whiter.
  • CVD stands for Chemical vapor deposition. CVD system begins with a diamond “seed.” A diamond seed is a small natural diamond fragment that can undergo both extreme temperature and pressure conditions. Therefore, selecting the strongest and highest grade (in colour and clarity) natural diamond bit is crucial for lab diamond creation.

Why LAB Grown Diamonds?

Natural diamonds formed deep in the earth’s crust over billions of years. The consequence of mining diamonds is significant. Natural diamonds—also known as blood diamonds—destroy local habitats and wildlife and compromise the wellbeing of laborers. Lab-grown diamonds have higher purity, cleaner origin, best value for money, eco-friendly and conflict-free than mined diamonds. The chemical composition, hardness, refractive index, dispersion and density are all the same.

How are LAB-created Diamonds certified and graded?

Lab diamonds receive grading reports from independent gemological organizations on the 4Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat Weight. Just like in mined diamonds, lab diamonds will exhibit variations across the 4Cs and range from poor to superlative quality. Not all lab diamonds are perfect, colourless, and flawless!

Lab Created Diamonds vs Natural Diamonds.

Lab diamonds and Natural diamonds are, for the most part, identical to the naked eye. If you buy a ring with a lab-created diamond, it’s just about specific that no one will be able to notice unless you tell them.

There can be some microscopic inclusions on lab diamonds that aren’t present in natural diamonds. It’s very rare for these inclusions to be visible unless using magnification tools.
In just about every case, a lab diamond will have the same brilliance and shine as a natural one, so if you’re primarily looking for a diamond that looks beautiful, lab diamonds can present a low-cost option without settling for a lower grade.

How are Lab Grown Diamonds made?

Lab grown diamonds are manufactured using conditions that mimic the natural process that creates earth-grown diamonds. This means that carbon is subjected to high temperatures and high pressure in a controlled environment. The end result is a diamond.

FAQ : LAB GROWN DIAMONDS

1. Are lab-grown diamonds fake diamonds?

A lot of people refer to lab diamonds as “fake” diamonds, but this is not accurate. Lab-grown and mined diamonds are tough to identify. That’s because they are both real and have the same clarity grades. The chemical composition, hardness, refractive index, dispersion and density are all the same. The only difference between them lies in where they found their origin.

2. Are lab-grown diamonds graded differently?

Grading reports for laboratory-grown diamonds look significantly different from those for natural diamonds. In addition, the terms used to report colour and clarity grades for laboratory-grown diamonds are different from those used for natural diamonds. Instead of D-to-Z colour grades, broader category terms (Colourless, Near-Colourless, Faint, Very Light and Light) are used. Clarity grades, abbreviated on natural diamond reports (VVS1, SI2, etc.), use broader descriptive category terms (i.e., Very Very Slightly Included, Slightly Included) on the reports for laboratory-grown diamonds.

3. Why are lab-grown diamonds less expensive than natural diamonds?

Lab-created diamonds offer the best value for money and are more reasonable than natural diamonds of comparable size and quality.

4. Can you insure a lab-grown diamond?

Yes! Just like a natural diamond, laboratory-grown diamonds can be insured. In fact, by choosing a lab-grown diamond, you’ll save money on the diamond itself. Still, you’ll also save money on the annual premium of the insurance policy due to the lower overall cost of the insurable piece.

5. Do lab-grown diamonds have resale value?

Many traditional jewellers tell customers that Lab Created Diamonds have absolutely no value, but this could not be further from the truth. Most Earth-Mined Diamonds have resale value, and most Lab Created Diamonds will have a similar resale value, as well.

6. Do Lab grown diamonds get cloudy over time?

Lab-made diamonds typically have good clarity. Like a high-quality natural diamond, lab-made diamonds won’t get cloudy.
